Comparison of variable rate prescriptions and optimum seeding rate in soybean

As the cost of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed increases, farmers are interested in reducing seeding rates. Variable-rate (VRS) allows to adjust rates within a field by management zone, and many practice VRS soybean. However, without validation, accuracy existing practices is unknown. The objectives this study were to: (a) determine agronomic optimum rate (AOSR) predetermined zones (b) compare AOSR each farmer's standard practice. Ten on-farm trials established Ohio Michigan during 2017 2018. consisted three uniform treatments low, moderate, high variable-rate treatment determined cooperating farmer. Farmers used variety methods create their fields. Within site-year, grain yield was not different among zones. farmer-selected 10% calculated 6 out 15 In 8 zones, underseeded >10%, one zone overseeded >10%. Underseeding likely due low plant populations caused heavy rainfall after planting or late planting, even though high. We recommend take stand count understand relationship between population individual accordingly.
